BYD to build vehicle factory in Europe for localized production

BYD, an aspiring frontrunner in the realm of new energy vehicles (NEV), has unveiled its ambitious European expansion plan, marking a significant stride in establishing a cutting-edge manufacturing and production facility in Szeged, Hungary. Distinguished as the inaugural facility established by a Chinese automotive enterprise in Europe, this state-of-the-art center will feature an advanced car production line. Anticipated to unfold in multiple phases, this venture is poised to yield manifold benefits, including the generation of thousands of local jobs, an impetus to the regional economy, and the fortification of indigenous supply chains.

Envisioned as a crucible of pioneering technologies and marked by highly automated production processes, the new facility aspires to emerge as a preeminent global hub for manufacturing new energy passenger vehicles. Beyond the confines of industrial progress, the construction of this facility is primed to catalyze positive outcomes for the local economy by fostering technological cross-pollination and innovation between China and Hungary. Leveraging its proficiency in integrated vertical supply chains, BYD is committed to establishing a green ‘ecosystem’ that resonates with environmental sustainability at the local level.

Positioned strategically in the heart of Europe, Hungary, renowned for its robust transportation infrastructure and a rich legacy of automotive expertise, emerges as a pivotal hub for BYD’s strategic maneuvers. The nation’s stature as a preferred production venue for passenger cars, underscored by a mature infrastructure and well-entrenched industrial foundations, aligns seamlessly with the discerning choices made by other elite European manufacturers.

BYD’s foray into the European market has witnessed remarkable strides in its inaugural year, marked by the establishment of 230 retail outlets across 19 nations. The introduction of five new models spanning diverse segments, encompassing hatchbacks, sedans, and SUVs, such as BYD HAN, BYD TANG, BYD ATTO 3, BYD SEAL, and BYD DOLPHIN, attests to the brand’s commitment to diversification. With plans to unveil three additional models within the coming year, BYD is poised to amplify its footprint in the European automotive landscape.

Guided by its global vision to “Cool the Earth by 1°C,” BYD is resolute in its mission to expedite the integration of new energy passenger vehicles into the European market. This concerted effort is emblematic of BYD’s overarching global strategy, propelling its green transformation agenda and actively contributing to reshaping the global energy landscape.

While we won’t be getting cars sourced from the European factory anytime soon, with BYD now having a stronger local presence thanks to the distribution power of AC Motors, these look to be exciting times for the company.
