SMC tollway group determines reason for Autosweep RFID disruption

Listen to article

Yesterday (November 17, 2022), posts were circulating on social media about heavy traffic build-up on the Skyway and South Luzon Expressway (SLEX). Normally, the SMC-controlled highway systems get clogged due to sheer vehicle volume. However, it seems Thursday’s traffic build-up was caused by something else; a total system outage.

SMC infrastructure clarifies RFID outage

According to the Autosweep toll operator, its IT team traced the source of the outage to a cut in the fiber optics network that the operator uses. As for the cause of the cut, they aren’t sure yet, but signs are pointing toward a major accident as the possible culprit.

A total of 84,000 vehicles may have been affected by the outage between the times of 6 am to 2 pm on Thursday, November 17, 2022. Including motorists who had their accounts deducted upon entry, affected motorists will receive a refund in their Autosweep accounts. Furthermore, to alleviate the traffic situation the affected toll plazas were opened and toll fees were waived.
