Everyone who’s anyone in the car-loving world loves the Trueno. The AE86 has been immortalized, and its “child” the GR86 took a page off its daddy’s book and has been given a makeover with the Trueno Edition. This modernized “legend” will sport the familiar stripes of its forebear, and more than just aesthetics, it gets a whole lot of goodies to make Initial D and Keiichi Tsuchiya fans scream “DORIFTO” in delight.

The Trueno Edition is based on the Premium variant, and it will sport the familiar two-tone striped exterior. Two base colors will be available, but the options will specifically be called Halo and Black or Track bRed and Black.

It will feature a hood draped in black, a black TRUENO Edition side panel graphic, and a black-painted duckbill “wing”. A callback to the 1980s model, a TRUENO Edition badge is placed center of the front bumper lip and rear decklid. Black metallic finished 18-inch, 10-spoke aluminum alloy wheels unique to the TRUENO Edition as well as black door handles and mirror caps round off the additional exterior accents.

Inside the GR86 Trueno Edition, you’ll find bucket seats finished in Ultrasuede, complete with red leather. Red contrast stitching also makes it to the shift boot and leather-wrapped steering wheel. A special edition shift knob has also been fitted in, bearing the TRUENO name. All-weather floor and trunk mats also add a special touch to both the cabin and cargo space. As standard, it also comes with an 8-inch touchscreen display that includes both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity with sound coming by way of a premium eight-speaker audio system for an immersive driving experience.

As can be seen in the picture above, only 860 units will ever be made. A number plate on the driver’s side dash will mark the rarity of such specimens.
Among its added performance bits are the addition of ZF SACHS Dampers and Brembo Brakes. The nitrogen- and oil-filled SACHS Dampers are designed to absorb vibrations across a wide range of speeds, maximize ground contact, and support firm, stable steering, all while balancing road feedback and ride comfort. The red-painted Brembo 4-piston front and 2-piston rear brake calipers provide better stopping power while being paired with 325 x 33 mm rotors in the front and 315 x 20 mm rotors in the rear.
As for power, the engine of choice is the naturally aspirated 2.4-litre FA-24 engine. It’s good for 228 HP and 250 Nm of torque at 3,700 RPM. The motor is mated to a 6-speed manual transmission or a 6-speed automatic. Both transmissions come with a Torsen limited-slip rear differential for enhanced traction while cornering. Additional clutch discs and a new high-capacity torque converter allow for smooth delivery of the FA-24’s higher power and torque. For those who love pushing to limit in a manual, drivers can engage Track mode or switch off Vehicle Stability Control (VSC) with just the push of a button.
An added bonus to the manual transmission-equipped option is the addition of the Active Safety Suite. The system uses a stereo camera to monitor the road ahead and includes features like Pre-Collision Braking, Adaptive Cruise Control, Lane Departure Warning, Sway Warning, Lead Vehicle Start Alert and High Beam Assist. This system was previously available only in the automatic transmission-equipped models. The addition of active safety adds to Toyota’s Star Safety System, which includes Vehicle Stability Control (VSC), Traction Control (TRAC), Anti-lock Brake System (ABS) and more.

For those who already have their own GR86 but would want a piece of the Trueno Edition’s performance upgrade pie, the suspension and brake upgrades will be available for purchase as a special Performance Package.
No price has been indicated yet, but we’re pretty sure that it will fetch a pretty hefty premium. But for the corner-carving, tofu-delivering lot, no price will (probably) be too high for this special edition. The only question now is if any of these units will make it to the Philippines. Yes, strictly speaking, 310 will be for the United States and 50 will be for Canada, but who knows? Maybe some magic can be called upon for this “Trueno” to grace our shores.
