Hyundai Motor supports World Cup 2022 thrust for sustainability with eco-friendly vehicle fleet

Hyundai Motor Company will be working hand-in-hand with FIFA World Cup 2022 towards a carbon-neutral goal. As a sponsor of the biggest football event in the world, Hyundai will goal provide eco-friendly vehicles for 50% of the event’s passenger transportation. This will be the first time in the history of the competition that it will have eco-friendly vehicles in its event fleet at this big scale.

A fleet totaling 616 vehicles will be supplied by Hyundai for this year’s FIFA World Cup. Of that number, 446 are passenger vehicles, with just over half (226 units) being hybrid electric (HEV) and battery electric (BEV) models. They will also provide 10 Elec City electric buses for everyone to use for the duration of the event that is set to kick off in Qatar from November 20 to December 18, 2022.

To make sure that the entire fleet will be readily and consistently usable, there will be roadside charging services for discharged BEVs using the innovative Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) function on two IONIQ 5 BEVs. FIFA will also provide 100 kW-150 kW EV chargers at the event’s parking facilities located in Doha, Qatar, to ensure the BEVs’ continuous operation.

The Korean brand will also conduct real-time monitoring of the fleet vehicles for any breakage or accidents, and provide prompt service response, such as emergency dispatch, troubleshooting, and vehicle inspection as needed.

Just in case you’re curious, the fleet will consist of units of the IONIQ 5, Sonata HEV, Tucson HEV, and KONA HEV as well as the Genesis G80 EV and GV70 EV to transport FIFA VIPs and staff, and Elec City buses to transport members of the media.

Manufacturers the world over have begun a journey towards green and sustainable mobility. On a stage as grand as the FIFA World Cup, Hyundai could not have gotten a better spot to highlight their commitment and more so their vehicles that can help usher in an eco-friendly automotive world.

Personally, I’ve always rooted for Deutschland in the World Cup, but with this great and commendable effort, I might just shout “Aja!” this year instead! Kamsahamnida, Hyundai!
