Mercedes-AMG confirms FIA WEC debut in 2025

Mercedes-AMG will make its highly anticipated debut in the FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC) in 2025, marking a return to the iconic 24 Hours of Le Mans after more than 25 years. The German manufacturer will partner with Italian team Iron Lynx, which will field two Mercedes-AMG GT3 cars in the LMGT3 category.

Iron Lynx, a consistent presence in the FIA WEC since 2019, has secured three podium finishes in the series, including at the 2021 24 Hours of Le Mans. For Mercedes-AMG, this marks a historic return to endurance racing at Le Mans, where it achieved overall victories in 1952 and 1989.

Christoph Sagemüller, Head of Mercedes-AMG Motorsport, expressed excitement about the venture: “It’s no secret that we’ve been eager to return to Le Mans. The 2025 FIA WEC season is the right time. The first season with LMGT3 cars has been fascinating, and we aim to add even more excitement. Our Mercedes-AMG GT3 paired with Iron Lynx is the perfect combination to set a new milestone.”

Stefan Wendl, Head of Mercedes-AMG Customer Racing, highlighted the partnership’s potential: “Our collaboration with Iron Lynx has already secured an FIA WEC entry. The homologation of the Mercedes-AMG GT3 for LMGT3 also opens opportunities for other customer teams to compete at Le Mans, which is great news for our racing program.”

“Mercedes-AMG brings unmatched determination and ambition. With their support, we’re confident we can compete strongly from the start. We’re eager to begin preparations with the new race cars for the 2025 season and continue our commitment to FIA WEC and Le Mans.”

Two drivers have already been confirmed for the team. Matteo Cressoni, a former Italian Formula 3 Champion with five WEC podium finishes, and endurance racing veteran Claudio Schiavoni, who recently secured third overall in the 2023 European Le Mans Series LMGTE division.

The 2025 FIA WEC season kicks off on February 28 with the 1812km of Qatar. For motorsport fans, Mercedes-AMG’s return promises to be a thrilling addition to the endurance racing field.
