BMW has unveiled its first photos of the new BMW M5 Touring, a vehicle promising a multifaceted driving experience with a balance of daily usability, long-distance capability, and high performance. Highlighted features include the ability to drive on electric power in urban areas, acceleration from zero to 100 km/h in 3.6 seconds, and an M HYBRID drive system.
World Premiere
The BMW M5 Touring will debut at Monterey Car Week in California, USA, in mid-August 2024. It will be launched in November 2024, with production starting at the BMW Group Plant in Dingolfing. The primary markets for this model are Germany and the USA, followed by Great Britain, Canada, and Switzerland.
Exterior Design
The M5 Touring sports an athletic design, featuring a high proportion of body-colored surfaces and a black solid finish roof. It has a model-specific side frame, flared wheel arches, muscular shoulders, and a long roofline. The front end has large air intakes and a redesigned BMW M kidney grille with BMW Iconic Glow contour lighting. The rear end features slim lights, vertical reflectors, and a two-section split diffuser with quad exhaust tailpipes.
Engine and Performance
The M HYBRID drive system combines a 4.4-liter V8 engine with an electric motor integrated into the eight-speed M Steptronic transmission. The V8 engine produces 585 hp and 750 Nm of torque. The electric motor delivers 197 hp and 280 Nm of nominal torque, which can increase to 450 Nm. All that gives the M5 Touring a grand total of 727 hp and 1000 Nm. The M5 Touring can also reach a top speed of 305 km/h with the optional M Driver’s Package and can drive on electric power alone at speeds up to 140 km/h. The high-voltage battery provides 18.6 kWh of usable energy, offering an electric range of 61–67 km.
Chassis and Dynamics
The M5 Touring’s chassis features a double-wishbone front axle and a five-link rear axle with adaptive M suspension, electronically controlled dampers, and Integral Active Steering. M-specific tuning enhances dynamic performance, while the standard M Compound brakes or optional M Carbon ceramic brakes ensure powerful stopping capabilities. The vehicle comes with 20-inch front and 21-inch rear M light-alloy wheels fitted with high-performance tires.
Assistance Systems
Standard driver assistance systems include front collision warning, lane departure warning, evasion assistant, attentiveness assistant, and speed limit info. Optional systems include a driving assistant professional with features like steering and lane control assistance, active cruise control, speed limit assistance, and a parking assistant professional, allowing for smartphone-controlled parking.
Customizable Driving Experience
The M-specific control panel allows customization of the driving experience, with settings for the drive system, chassis, steering, braking, and M xDrive. Drivers can save two configurations and access them via the M buttons on the steering wheel. The M HYBRID button lets drivers choose between Hybrid, Electric, and eControl modes, with Dynamic and Dynamic Plus modes available as part of M Drive Professional.
Interior and Technology
The interior features an M leather steering wheel, M multifunction seats, M-specific displays on the BMW Curved Display, and a BMW Head-Up Display. Standard amenities include Merino leather trim, BMW Interaction Bar, four-zone automatic climate control, and a Bowers & Wilkins Surround Sound System. Options include steering wheel heating, active seat ventilation, and a panoramic glass sunroof. The load capacity ranges from 500 to 1,630 liters, with Comfort Access and automatic tailgate operation for easy loading.
The latest BMW iDrive, based on BMW Operating System 8.5, offers a touchscreen and natural language interface, BMW Live Cockpit Professional, and 5G connectivity for digital services. Smartphone integration is seamless with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The M5 Touring also supports a Personal eSim and various personalization options through BMW ID and the My BMW App. So what do you think? Do you prefer the wagon or the sedan?
