LTO now producing 1M license plates per month, asks help from dealers(hips) for distribution
The LTO is confident that resolving the license plate backlog is at hand. Agency Chief Vigor Mendoza II proudly announced that their plate-making facility can now produce 1,000,000 plates per day with the Chief himself conducting constant inspections to ensure that no glitches will hamper operations and their goal of eliminating the backlog for both motor vehicle and motorcycle license plates.

Two weeks ago, LTO Chief Mendoza made a statement that it would only take 10 days for a brand-new car’s license plates to be released. Many were skeptical, of course. Fast forward and now, the agency is pretty confident that it’s on a clear course to finally getting rid of the plate backlog. As it stands, there is a backlog of 80,000 motor vehicle license plates and a staggering 13,000,000 for motorcycle plates, and with the current production rate of the plate-making facility, the Land Transportation Office will be able to address them before the end of November this month.
“We are now producing one million plates a month. We have dedicated machines that cater only to motor vehicles, and of course, focus din ang production para sa mas maraming backlog sa plaka ng motorsiklo [production is also focusing on the bigger backlog for motorcycle plates],” said Mendoza.

Aside from the LTO’s problem with license plate backlog, there is also the concern about delays in releasing the OR/CR of brand-new vehicles. This is something that Mendoza also aims to address as he asks for help from (the) dealers association. Currently, they are trying to fastrack some changes to address these issues with the help of another automobile group, the Chamber of Automotive Manufacturers of the Philippines, Inc. (CAMPI), and the motorcycle dealers association. Other major changes in policies were already forwarded for approval by the Department of Transportation (DOTr).
“I’d like to sit down with you Philippine Automotive Dealers Association (PADA) guys and discuss the problems in your head on how we can help you dig that and address those problems how to make things faster and more efficient as far as registration of vehicles is concerned,” Mendoza added.

With license plate production in full swing, the LTO is aiming for new vehicle owners to get their license plates within 7 to 10 days upon submission of documents of their car. Documents being mentioned, it is also the LTO‘s hope that their working hand-in-hand with dealer associations for both motor vehicles and motorcycles can finally result in a faster process for submission and subsequent processing and production of their OR/CR and plates.
Perhaps there really is a light at the end of the Republika ng Walang Plaka tunnel, yes?
